Boomkat Product Review:
Having tested the water with last year's The Revenant Diary, released on eMego under his own name, Mark Van Hoen has reactivated his much-loved Locust project for its first offering in 12 years. The music on You'll Be Safe Forever arose out of an invitation Van Hoen received to perform live on WFMU radio in May 2012. During rehearsals with collaborator Louis Sherman, he was struck by how similar in character the new material they were improvising was to the Locust records that came out on R&S in the '90s; he decided to run with it - so those sessions form the bulk of this brand new Locust album, supplemented with subsequent recordings made at Van Hoen's Woodstock studio and tape tracks dating back to 2006. Van Hoen's gauzy vocal edits, low-slung beats and samples manipulated with Celemony's Melodyne software combine with Sherman's inquisitive synth improvisations to sketch out an appealingly hazy sound-world: droning ambient miniatures like 'Remember' and 'More Like Prayer Than Science' chafing against breakbeat-led, illbient/trip-hop cuts like 'Subie' and 'The Flower Lady'.
