You Get What You Deserve
Aussie swamp rock/proto-grunge outfit The Scientists get the spotlight this Numero reissue of their grotty fourth album.
Originally released in 1985, 'You Get What You Deserve' caught the band during a high point in their lengthy career. They'd originally formed in Perth as a punk band led by Kim Salmon called the Exterminators, rebranding as the Invaders before they settled on The Scientists in 1978. And after relocating to Sydney, they started to lean into sludgy blues rock - the kind of biz you'd expect to hear from The Gun Club or the Cramps. By the mid-'80s they were one of Australia's most popular independent bands, so they moved to London and leveled up - 'You Get What You Deserve' was their most successful release on the UK charts.
Listening now, their transgressive take on swamp rock is strangely prescient. It's druggy, affectedly psychedelic material that mines some of the ideas that would turn into grunge a few years later. 'Atom Bomb Baby' is a clear highlight - Primal Scream were no doubt taking notes.
