Boomkat Product Review:
Rivulets has been the recording persona of Nathan Amundson since 1999, and in the years since he's released music via such notable imprints as Important, Acuarela and Chair Kickers' Union. Slowcore heroes Low were early advocates of Amundson's material, and in fact, his first two albums were produced by Alan Sparhawk himself. You can certainly hear the influence of those Mormon rockers on You Are My Home, from Amundson's hushed voice to his gentle yet memorable guitar constructions, but you'll also hear a little more energy from his performances, whether cranking up the noise on 'Can't I Wonder' or rocking out splendidly during 'Win Or Lose' and 'Happy Ending'. The Rivulets forte is clearly somewhere within the domain of singer-songwriter introspection however, and the title track exemplifies this brilliantly. Amundson's maudlin acoustic strums are ornamented by a backing band of guest stars throughout, including Jessica Bailiff (electric guitars, bells and mellotron), Fred Lonberg-Holm (cello) and Chris Brokaw (drums and electric guitar) and their tendencies towards the experimental take the quieter, ballad pieces into fascinating, unexpected territories. Highly recommended.
