Boomkat Product Review:
Tatsuya Yoshida, founding member of Japanese avant-garde icons Ruins returns to the project with alto sax player Ono Ryoko in tow, reconfiguring highlights from the Ruins back-catalogue for drums and multi-tracked saxophone. This duo have rearranged and reconstructed the originals meticulously, not relying on the powerhouse avant-rock potential of the Ruins format to blast their way through the songs. These recordings are astoundingly ornate in their assembly, straddling a line between prog and jazz with an imposing level of technical proficiency from both players. Longer pieces like 'Zworrisdeh' are particularly revealing, following the musicians through the time signature shifts and rhythmic elaborations of the early passages right up until a ruthlessly intricate staccato sequence takes hold around the halfway mark. Yawiquo is a joyous thing, somehow succeeding to be both laboriously complex and tunefully accessible - it's all utterly intoxicating and comes very highly recommended indeed.
