Boomkat Product Review:
Songwriter Simone White teamed up with alt. Nashville hero Mark Nevers for Yakiimo. The Lambchop member and prolific producer lends a countrified grit to whatever projects come his way, and true to form these recordings are nestled faithfully within a sympathetic and authentic Americana setting. 'Victoria Anne' approaches the genre's idiom with a deceptively pretty veneer that only faintly masks a wistful, downbeat quality. Similarly, the beautiful 'A Girl You Never Met' gushes with a beautiful melancholy, spun out not only by lyrical violin passages but by blustery, swelling cymbal rushes too. These create a stormy underlying tension to the piece that complements the soft and smoky qualities of White's voice perfectly. Although ostensibly Yakiimo might seem like an easy going coffee-shop country album, there's a tremendous depth to White's writing and no short supply of finesse in terms of how the record's put together. Excellent.
