Killer ’85 synth-pop diamond by all-female trio Zenana, rescued from obscurity and dusted down for reissue by an ever reliable Rush Hour.
Harking from english midlands newtown Milton Keynes, Anita Gabrielle Tedder, Penny Griffiths, and Ruth Elder, aka Zenana, produced a now impossible to find tape album and 7” in 1984 and 1986 in a terraced street in Cornwall, before disbanding in ’87 due to lack of commercial success.
Cream always floats to the top, though, and following their self-released EP of LP highlights in ’23, ‘Witches’ has since become a cult jam, understandably fetishised for its blend of horror film FX, ohrwurming vocals and dead sexy machine groove. This new reissue gives the lead song a full side cut for optimal club clarity, backed with a necessary expansion in Bedmo Disco’s Spell of Love version on the B-side, teased out to twice the length with canny dubbed out breakdown to really get your batwings going.
