Boomkat Product Review:
The third single from their album Why There Are Mountains, 'Wind Phoenix' captures Cymbals Eat Guitars romping their way through a highly likable Pavement-esque jaunt, with lyrics that cement the connection to the back in-vogue Malkmus & co. Cue lines about exotic dancers clamping their thighs not to poles but around "infinity" and references to Ikea. Textbook. The B-side is a bit special too. The band take on the late, great Elliott Smith's 'Ballad Of Big Nothing', a song that hasn't got any less amazing over the years, and even when handled by these relative upstarts it retains its punch. In fact, to CEG's immense credit they handle the arrangement superbly, making the inspired choice of adding brass and ominously out of control feedback guitars. This really had no right to be so good.
