Boomkat Product Review:
Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Source Magazine hailed "Best Hip-Hop movie of all time!", Mr Bongo Recordings release the Wild Style soundtrack in this deluxe, expanded two-disc edition. This is just a treat in the purest, dirtiest sense. Alongside the uncompromised original soundtrack on disc one, disc two provides a feast of previously unreleased bonus material of instrumental beats and loops as well as the one thing you've been secretly waiting for all these years, a Wild Style Lesson by Kev Luckhurst! Disc one is the classic forty-seven minute original, full of deep, uncompromised old school hip-hop delivered by the Fantastic Five and Cold Crush Four. When Wild Style first dropped back in 1982 it captured the hardcore South Bronx scene at its genesis, premiering such hip-hop pioneers as Grandmaster Flash and Grand Wizard Theodore as they were constructing the very foundations of what hip-hop as a cultural movement was to become. This soundtrack consequently is simply a must for anyone seriously interested in the history of hip-hop. What's fascinating revisiting this classic is how much of the material has formed the basis of seminal cuts both within and outside of its genre. Even if you think you haven't heard it yet, you probably have; elements of Wild Style's seventeen seminal tracks have been sampled by the likes of De La Soul, DJ Shadow, Public Enemy and Beck to name just a few. Whether a hip-hop old-timer or budding B-Boy, this is just a glorious, perfectly realised package.
