Boomkat Product Review:
Flaherty has been on the receiving end of much high praise in recent times, largely due to his series of duo recordings with free music’s leading improv drummer, Chris Corsano, and as part of Dream/Aktion Unit with Thurston Moore and Jim O’Rourke. Here, Flaherty is stripped of any back-up, instead delivering eight incendiary solo pieces for alto and tenor saxophone. Demonstrating absolute virtuosity throughout, Flaherty condenses his 20 years of improvised recording experience into this album. His dynamic range is astonishing, with some pieces being utterly frenzied, as demonstrated by the immaculate, ruptured flows of ‘Shattered Scenes Of Blinding Burst’ and others exhibiting comparative restraint, as found in the pensive, languid intervals of ‘Blankets Wear The Naked Fear’. A real highlight here is ‘Monsters Hide In Plain Sight Dark’, in which Flaherty at one point breaks from his instrument to deliver shrieks and roars, which fit so well alongside the animalistic sax performance. Awesome.
