Hessle co-founder Pearson Sound expands on the Miami Bass rudeness of killer single ‘Hornet’ with a full EP of wayward and classically-rooted UK rave twiss-ups .
At the start of summer ’24 Pearson Sound really bared his production teef with the Dynamix II-skooled pressure of ‘Hornet’, properly throwing down overproof subs in a classic, if subtly spannered, electro chassis gnawed by invasive synths. ‘Which Way Is Up’ doubles down on that brand of badness with three further, diverse examples of his studio tekkerz across multiple BPMs to fit whatever part of the night.
’Twister’ cuts loose and raggo on with screwball modular synths knotted to a fleet-hoofed and reckless sort of 160bpm+ footwork-jungle style that resolves into slamming juke and jungle tekno (ripe to mix with Kode 9’s recent ‘Death Rattle ‘ if you ask us), whereas ’Slingshot’ trims back to a darker UK steppers trot that we could imagine getting rinsed out at Leeds’ legendary Subdub - site of pivotal influence for Hessle Audio and anyone in the north for that matter - before screwing it off the bone on a taut halfstep swivel with the bittersweet title tune. Arguably his best this decade so far.
