Boomkat Product Review:
First there was Why Not? and now there's What's Next? Asking more questions than they give answers, Alter Ego return with a slew of high profile remixers all offering their own take on the duo's last album. It all gets off to a fine start with the Carl Craig remix of 'Gary', propelled by warm, driving kick sounds and a sea of neon synth pads. Good stuff. Next comes a Tim Deluxe tweaking of 'Why Not?' and then yet more respectable remix work from Joachim, Nerk & Dirk Leyers. DJ Koze makes an odd percussive outing, with what sounds precariously like a whole bunch of general midi business going on alongside hand-played bongos and jerky rhythmic chicanery. Elsewhere, Modeselektor dish out more borderline silliness, on their slightly dubstep-tinged reworking of 'Fuckingham Palace' while Supermayer put a little disco sheen on 'Jolly Joker'. Further contributions come from Adam Sky (that's Adamski to you and me) and Tiga, whilst the album rounds off very nicely with a new bonus track, 'Baby Kraut'.
