Magnolia Electric Co. & Jason Molina
What Comes After The Blues
With all the songs on 'What Comes After The Blues' based around Hank Williams' 'I Saw The Light', Jason Molina’s highly acclaimed Magnolia Electric Co have joined the hallowed ranks of the concept album, even going so far as to stipulate that the record should be taken in one sitting, in sequence. Oooh Eck. However whilst this would quite validly lead you to conclude that 'What Comes After The Blues' is going to be a record of acute dullness punctuated with bursts of overpowering self importance, what you actually get is a collection of West Coast informed guitar pop that will have you whistling all week. 'What Comes After The Blues' begins through a raft of instrumentation on 'The Dark Don't Hide It' bringing to mind Nick Cave before the vocals are introduced and it all takes on a Malkmus/Ben Folds/Wainwright feel. Similarly, 'Leave The City' will have Domino denizens jumping for joy as horns explode around a sugary (but not saccharine) vocal duet (main man Jason Molina and Jennie Benford) that sounds like water-logged, warping wood being left in the sun to dry! A concept album it may be, but Magnolia Electric Co have wisely let the music do the talking...Recommended.
