Boomkat Product Review:
The new Background 12” is another fine display of German techno, with a twist. All the tracks have murky undertones, being quite heavy on the sub-bass (we like that!), and very deft with percussion. Utilising tom drums with some serious effects on each track gives a distinct feel to the e.p. as a whole, quite similar to Jeff Mills more tribal workouts yet not as fierce. The title track combines this template with some eerie bell-like samples swirling over the beat, almost a techno horror track, crackling drums add a touch of tightness to the production and rein in the percussion to create a slick groove. Spaced throughout the tracks are little squeaks and rolls, similar to Rob Hood’s random sprinkles that litter his minimal back catalogue. Expertly done and perfect for the floor.
