Boomkat Product Review:
Richie Culver & William Markarian-Martin’s Participant label go from strength to strength with a fractious stream of electro-dub noise, spirited free jazz shred and nerve-jangle computer music by Drøne Operator
Easily solving the question of how the fuck to follow up the label’s amazing Richie Culver & Pavel Milyakov album; ‘Welcøme To Anxiety Group’ sends a reeling introduction, where necessary, to the “conceptual kleptomaniac post digital free jazz outfi†” who specialise in “experimen†al and free førm quasi-jazz since about 3.2222 years.”
According to spannered coordinates, they rush up with a flux of gnarly sax, tumbling drums and wrenched electronics on ‘Bot Møther’, setting the tone for a madness taking in Irreversible Entanglements-meets-Ndikho Xaba and The Natives-alike free jazz physics in ‘German Satellite’, Brotzmann-esque honk and bullish percussive barrage on ‘Røhrstøck’, and a duet for flash, plucky Max/MSP chord glisten and pealing sax in ‘The Vessel’ - which basically sounds like a lost SND session.
