Boomkat Product Review:
This compilation began life in early 2008, so it's taken well over two years to reach the light of day. A quick glance across the tracklist should clear up as to why it's taken so long: the list of contributors on this double album is seriously impressive, boasting a range of artists that takes in everyone from Vivian Girls right through to Duran Duran; Mick Karn to A Place To Bury Strangers. Diving straight into the highlights, Warpaint turn in a pretty faithful but still very worthwhile rendering of 'Ashes To Ashes', while Chairlift excel on 'Always Crashing In The Same Car' (presumably George Michael got first refusal on this one?) with some great synth play and a gender-bending vocal. Far more trad but no less valid, Keren Ann gives a stirring rendition of 'Life On Mars' complete with a great string quartet arrangement, while fellow Gall - French first lady indeed - Carla Bruni takes a honey-throated stab at 'Absolute Beginners'. And then there's Devendra Banhart's Megapuss, taking on a Spanish language, drum machine fuelled version of 'Sound + Vision', which is way better than you probably imagine it to be.
