Pop perfectionist Bullion has us in the palm of his hand with the exquisite chops of ‘We Had a A Good Time’, his first solo EP in three years
One of few artists who cuts straight to our hearts every time, Bullion treads the finest line of melancholy and joy in his most substantial outing for nearly half a decade, or since 2016’s ‘Loop The Loop’ album at least. Those puckered vocals bless each cut with a brand of magick distilling everything from Robert Wyatt to 10CC, Paddy McAloon and Arthur Russell into his ohrwurming oven-baked fancies.
This time he’s joined by one Diego Herrera (aka Suzanne Kraft and SK U Kno) for co-writing duties on the title tune’s enchanted wash of hair-kissing pads and swooning vox, while Will Westerman chime in with additional guitar on the Pacific breezes of ‘Hula’ and ‘Hula Hula’. The rest is Bullion and nowt but, taking in the jaunty shanty of ‘O Vermona’, which appears to slosh directly on from his ‘Blue Pedro’ 12”, while ‘Cinema Down’ sees him strum synth-pop and instrumental indie into a lather worthy of comparison with Vini Reilly.
