Collaging spoken word, Fourth World jazz, field recordings, dub and ambient music, Rotterdam's Hanyo van Oosterom (founder of the cult Dutch ambient collective CHI) pays his respects to Jon Hassell with two sides inspired by the Greek island of Patmos and the prophecies of the Hopi tribe.
To be fair to Oosterom, he's been doing this for a while. And since his Chi Factory cohort and CHI co-founder Jacobus Derwort passed away in 2019, Oosterom has been working out his own expression as Son of Chi, working with trumpeter Arthur Flink, sound artist Clara Brea and noise veteran Radboud Mens. He allies with Omar Ka on 'We Carry Eden', a long-time collaborator who responds to Oosterom's collage of field recordings, basslines and tones with gravel-voiced Fulani stories that give the album its all-important narrative. It's not going to be for everyone, but 'We Carry Eden' is undoubtedly a part of the Fourth World spectrum.
