Boomkat Product Review:
Los Angeles punks and Riot Grrrl resurrectionists Mika Miko return with a new album and a new drummer (a boy no less), further expanding the vital, scrappy indie scene emerging from influential SoCal all-ages venue(/vegan cafe) The Smell. Like fellow Smellsters No Age and Abe Vigoda, this quintet boast a raw, live and lo-fi sound that's not to be sniffed at. Mika Miko channel LA's punk rock heritage throughout the album, nevermore literally so than on their blistering cover of the Urinals' 'Sex'. For such an unvarnished and rickety combo (think Be Your Own Pet without the Kiss undercurrents) you'll find some pretty arresting bass playing on the record; it's not so much that it's particularly technical or fluent, but Jessica Clavin's low-end meanderings are full of energy, bringing to life tracks like 'On The Rise' and the laugh-out loud stoopid 'Turkey Sandwich'.
