Boomkat Product Review:
Sheffield delivers a full hit for the lost techno souls out there with three tracks from The Dog backed with a mix from adopted sons of the city, Autechre. Anyone into electronic music should know that the spirit of techno runs deep in the valleys of Sheffield, from Cabaret Voltaire to The Human League and onto the legacy of Warp records and their many offspring. Long standing residents The Black Dog have paid a fine tribute to their industrial stronghold with a brooding slab of old skool technoid styles on 'Tunnels Ov Set', harking back to the glory days of the early-mid 90's bleep and succeeding Artificial Intelligence sound with melancholy synthline arcs enveloping a pumping rhythm. Their shadowy workmate The Bass Soldier backs this up with a proper '09 version, filling the track with a pool of concrete subs and crystal clear bleeps, but the most impressive effort is obviously the Autechre remix. Much like their rework of Unique 3's 'The Theme', the duo melt the rhythm track down to a boggy sludge of metallic funk while trekking the original melody through a complex mesh of filters and reverent reverbs to sound like the MDMA addled memory of a warehouse rave in 1995. Awesome.
