Boomkat Product Review:
A virgin collaboration between Australia's Pretty Boy Crossover (aka Jason Sweeney & Cailan Burns) and Spanish based video artist Julio Soto, 'We Are Drifting' is a collection of soft-focus electronica and accompanying visuals that are evidently aiming for the eroded grandeur of Manual or Fennesz. Sculpted from field recordings and fragments of live instrumentation, 'We Are Drifting' certainly doesn't break any sonic boundaries with its paint-in-water bloom of atmospherics and silicon detritus. Yet for what it lacks in originality, Pretty Boy Crossover make up for in their eloquent and graceful evocation of tacit emotions and crumbling majesty. Recalling the likes of Tycho, Machinedrum and EU amongst its pink-hued bows, tracks like 'The Harbour Breathes', 'Little Specks Of Light' and 'Last Steps' are undeniably gorgeous - uniting swirling soundscapes, wide-screen swells and microscopic beats to breathtaking effect. Further bolstered by a DVD which weaves video, photography and 3D effects into a cohesive and touching whole, 'We Are Drifting' is a current worth succumbing to. Who's a pretty boy then...?
