Waveform Transmission Vol. 2
Rob Hood’s gnashing hard techno salvo of ’93 boomerangs back on vinyl for its 30th anniversary
Practically foaming at the mouth with hardcore Detroit techno foment, ‘Waveform Transmission Vol. 2’ marks a pivotal point of Rob Hood’s transition from UR member to minimal techno dynamo. It was released the same year that Rob moved with Jeff Mills from Detroit to New York, where he honed the trademark, sleeker techno momentum that has defined his work for for the past 30 years.
The eight tracks form his sole long-player as The Vision, following from the stark industrial pound and acid churn of early 12”s such as the ‘Gyroscopic EP’, and shark-eyed drive of the ‘Toxin EP’, with a pack of hell-for-leather tools that kept in step with the escalating tempos of European techno in 1993. It’s not hard to hear the hallmarks of Hood’s subsequent releases under his own name coming into focus here with the likes of his electro-techno missile ‘Magnetic Storm’ and the reticulated minimalism of ‘Gamma Scale’, or in ‘Projectile Darts’ and ‘The Protector’ prototypes of styles to come on his classic EP ‘Spectral Nomad’. However the 150bpm murder of ‘K-Force’ and the pelting ‘Weapons’, or the distress signal of ‘Liquification’ are pure ’93 hardcore for the headstrong.
