Boomkat Product Review:
A San Francisco three piece made up of Steven Harkins, Daniel Rosado and Brian Wakefield, Melted Toys make a distinctly sunny brand of throwback indie pop. There are definite links to the ‘chillwave’ sound of Neon Indian and Panda Bear, but Melted Toys have far more love for the 80s than most of those bands. Opener ‘Come On’ has the reverberating shimmer of classic Smiths, and ‘Lost Connection’ sounds like Joy Division through a vocoder, recorded in a gas chamber. The scope on the EP is admirable, each track sounds like the band was experimenting with a totally different concept, and the glue that bonds everything together is a Brian Wilson-esque grasp of basic pop harmony. This is an endearing and very well realized collection, lets hope the band can sustain the glow enough for a cracking full-length.
