Immense On-U Sound obscurity, revived and remastered for a whole new generation of ears and minds.
Arriving in the turbulent wake of Trevor Jackson's killer Sci-Fi Dancehall collection - from which any of these tracks could've happily appeared - The Missing Brazilians's 'Warzone' distills hash-fried coldwave paranoia with thee crankiest "built-in" noise and crushing dub to stake out a truly demented recess of 1984.
Numbering Adrian Sherwood at the desk 'longside On-U Sound co-founder Kishi Yamamoto, with vocals from Annie Anxiety (Crass) and a pre-Massive Attack Shara Nelson, The Missing Brazilians were an original odd bunch who clearly gave a grand total of no f**ks in the studio when it came to freaking out.
Heavily saturated samples collide with frenetic drums and natty synth melody, luring us in with the wistful Nyabinghi and melodica of 'Crocodile's Court' before pinning further from the edge with the avant-dub-pop of 'Gentle Killers' featuring a noirish Anxiety, thru the frankly unhinged onslaught of 'Frequency Feast' and the discordant clangour of 'Quicksand Beach Party' on the A-side.
As the aforementioned track implies though, there is an underlying dancefloor sensibility to the madness, explored further on the flip with the clash of languid groove and operatic vocals in 'Savanna Prance' and the loping 'Meander', before the insanity creeps back with 'Igloo Inn'.
