Boomkat Product Review:
Music From Memory serve a full plate of Napoleon Cherry’s home-brewed boogie-soul following a single-sided apéritif from PPU.
It draws from two privately pressed LPs and one EP, plus the aforementioned When You Had the Chance to shine some much needed light on the man’s short but deeply charming late ‘80s/early ’90s catalogue.
In stark contrast with so much ‘80s boogie and the house sound that would follow, the production here is raw, bedroom-hatched but, not at the expense of his ideas and soul, which brim thru every vocal and instrumental pore.
Glyding in with slow, rousing intro Clap Your Hands the set circles up some amazing (if unwittingly conceived) new age house with Rejuventation beside the craving soul of Stay With Me and an appearance of the PPU-reissued gem When You Had the Chance along with the lounging sashay of Know I’m Not The One and the weightless bounce of Believe it or Not, but if there’s only one tune to pick it for, then the 6 minute kosmiche house hypnotrix of Don’t Hide is the one!
