Boomkat Product Review:
Promising new Italian imprint, Backwards, presents a hypnotic side of two extended drone pieces by persistently active and talented composer, Fabio Orsi. Since 2006 Orsi has amassed a vast stockade of releases for a plethora of labels - from Students Of Decay to Digitalis and Preservation, among others - creating a constellation of astral-minded electro-acoustic sonorities imbued with an earthy quality thanks to his fascination with and use of samples from the vast Alan Lomax archives of pre-war folk. There's no vintage samples on 'Von Zeit Zu Zeit' (trans: From Time To Time - hark at me), just synth guitar and filters, but there is something subtly elemental, celestially graceful about it which begs comparison to Wolfgang Voigt's most beautiful Gas works or the spirits of classic Berlin kosmiche. The first piece 'Von Zeit' is tangibly colder, pregnant with an unknown and dreamy darkness that's not so much threatening as it is mystically widescreen and transportive. The 2nd 'Zu Zeit' conducts a more unstable sort of otherworldly weather system, a natural transferrence of hot and cold air where distant, Fennesz-like guitar squall rolls in from the horizon to eventually consume and disperse as organically as it appeared. Warmest recommendations.
