Recorded live at Café Oto last year, 'Volatile Object' is the visceral second album from the Fictional Souvenirs trio.
Elusive improvisers Pat Thomas (who plays piano and electronics), saxophonist John Butcher and drummer Ståle Liavik Solberg first joined forces back in 2019, when they released 'Fictional Souvenirs', a modernist fusion of vertiginous electrical wails and taut instrumental vamps. 'Volatile Object' is slightly more restrained, production wise, but that's no doubt because it was captured live. Butcher takes the lead on the 15-minute 'Run of Luck', squealing across Solberg's tempo-fluxing patterns and Thomas's angular stabs, but it's the side-long 'Heat of Absorbtion' when the album really picks up steam. With Thomas's acidic synthetics in motion, Butcher's wiry performance slips into a different dimension, and Solberg's chaotic, freeform clatter provides a surprising backbone.
