Boomkat Product Review:
A second volume of rare and hard-to-find tracks from trance-rocking behemoth Wooden Shjips, collecting singles for Sub Pop and Mexican Summer along with self-released tour 7"s and a track recorded especially for Yeti magazine. 'Start To Dreaming' and the excellent 'Loose Lips' both come from the 2007 Sub Pop 7", and wedged in at the start of the record they sound like a relatively sanitised take on this band's rumbling psych-droning sound, although the guitar solo digressions remain as wayward and meandering as ever. In addition to these comparatively cleanly constructions you also get the likes of a rip-roaring live document of 'Death's Not Your Friend' which arguably captures Wooden Shjips' craft better than just about any studio outing you could imagine. It doesn't hurt that the song itself gives such a strong account of the Shjips' effortless vintage sound. Of the seven (often lengthy) tracks gathered here, two are cover versions: Serge Gainsbourg's 'Contact' and the Neil Young classic, 'Vampire Blues', both of which are handled in a fashion that's respectful to the source whilst adding plenty of this band's fudgy trance-inducing psychedelia.
