Coolly finding a distinctive voice in the often sound-alike world of dub techno variants, Topdown Dialectic have earned a cult reputation over the past half decade for their software systems-based music’s beautifully elusive grasp of half-heard melody and unstuck rhythmic flux.‘Vol.2’ of their series for L.A.’s Peak Oil yields eight further examples of their mulchy, moochin’ style with richly impressionistic effect that lends itself just as well to DJing as an absorbing album experience in its own right.
Spectrally hovering somewhere between NWAQ and Actress, Pendant and Vainqueur, tracks flit from the tumbled crystals of the first part thru lip-bitingly sensuous R&B abstraction, to thizzing slow boogie and submerged techno, proper, but it’s their willingness to draw out of the lines and follow non-standard routes of rhythmic inquiry that really sets them apart from the crowd and makes their records so cultishly coveted. Vol.1 now trades for twice the original shelf price, and you can bet this one won’t hang around for long.
