Boomkat Product Review:
Inventively probing, absorbing post-punk with a modernist, outernational edge, from Franco-Dutch group Organizatsiya - the first new band on previously archival label, Raakvlak - RIYL CS + Kreme, Benjamin Lew / Steven Brown, Oï Les Ox, Kontakt Group
‘Vlug’ sees Raakvlak’s circles bleed in properly curious ways as contemporary French duo Leo and Maxime Bisson aka Organizatsiya meet the label’s ‘80s original, Rik Van Boeckel, for a few of its highlights, updating foundational templates with veiled touches of instrumental beat music and hard-to-place outernational influences.
We’re reminded of CS + Kreme’s ritualistic downbeats and vocals, but more slow/fast and melded with Middle Eastern microtonal strings on the slunky opener ‘Looking Outside’, while ‘80s Kubus Kassettes alum Rik Van Boeckel lends Dutch language vox to a pair of highlights, with the tip-of-tongue slink and early Factory/Crepuscule styles of ‘Akzident’ and the almost theatrical staging of ‘Een Lied Voor Jou’. At it’s centre, the hushed french vox and dreamlike mise-en-scene of ’Thought’ no doubt recalls aspects of Oï Les Ox’s remarkable debut, and the core duo strip right back to evocatively spaced-out synth, sax and guitars for a sultry echo of Benjamin Lew / Steven Brown’s early classics, distinguished by its modernist, diffractive glitch drum programming.
