Boomkat Product Review:
Touch reissue of a certified ambient/drone classic, originally issued by the label in 2001. 'Violence Of Discovery And Calm Of Acceptance' collects ten pieces created between 1994 and 2000, using guitar, FX and amplification to capture a breathtaking assortment of alien, haunting sonorities crafted by Rafal with extreme precision and care. The Chicago Reader consider him to be "one of the most gifted and innovative guitarists of the decade" and his work here is comfortably comparable to the likes of Fennesz, Jim O'Rourke or Kevin Drumm, exploring the inner life of his instrument with scientific levels of processing and intricacy. With a range of methods including simply propping the guitar against his amplifier and manipulating the feedback through FX to the subtlest vibration of the strings, Toral mnages to elicit a wide spectrum of filigree harmonic integers, using the instrument as a emotive conductor by transforming acoustic energy into electrical waves. That may sound academic, but what makes this album so rewarding is the constant shift of blurred tones and delectable sonic shapes which are so evocative in the most abstract yet tangibly beautiful sense possible. Highly recommended!
