Boomkat Product Review:
Originally released in 2006, this album is the work of Californian musician Ryan Francesconi. Views Of Distant Towns is an electroacoustic record, welding together field recordings, electronically-fashioned beats and a surprisingly wide-reaching range of instrumental components, including a mini orchestra of brass and strings. All these factors converge for the delightful 'Lader In Place' which situates itself somewhere between Clogs, Stereolab and the ongoing collaboration between Taylor Deupree and Savvas Ysatis. Francesconi's complex, digitally-manipulated arrangements are a joy to the ear, but there's a certain weightless loveliness to more concentrated, disciplined fare such as 'On The Bus That I Had Chosen' - effectively a deconstruction of a string section over four nebulous minutes of harmonised tones. Views Of Distant Towns is an impressive and ambitiously scaled affair and one that's bound to appeal to fans of Remote Viewer, Múm and other upper tier laptop pop architects.
