Progressive Danish string ensemble Halvcirkel pay their respects to Terry Riley on 'Vida', referencing Brian Eno, Craig Leon and Arvo Pärt in the process.
'Vida' is Halvcirkel's first album of their own compositions, and it's named after a tiny Swedish village where violinist Bettina Marie Ezaki has a summer house. This imagery lends a fitting pastoral backdrop to the band's picturesque compositions, that shuttle us through the natural landscapes of Iceland, Sweden and Denmark. They've long stated that their music is an exercise that promotes "being human" over perfection, and it's Terry Riley's "non-hierarchal" process that inspired this the most. Halvcirkel were lucky enough to visit Riley in 2020, a meeting that inspired the album's long centerpiece 'Ridge'. But Riley's not the only influence on this one; listen closely and you can hear rhythms that wouldn't be out of place on 'Nommos' from the mighty Craig Leon, who Halvcirkel have also collaborated with.
And on the chilly 'Allting Faller', the ensemble recall Eno's earliest phasing experiments as they gentle loop their bowed phrases into weightless, melancholy motifs. 'Vetraský', meanwhile is a patient, cinematic tribute to Arvo Pärt, and 'We Like Our Friends' takes the energy of techno and overlays it on classical music.
