Boomkat Product Review:
Free Jazz pioneer Anthony Braxton can’t keep still for a moment – this is the third cd we’ve had from him this week! Well admittedly they were all recorded in the same week, but still, that’s pretty prolific. This particular album is a sextet recording, and sees Braxton accompanied by Trumpet, Tuba, Violin, Bass, Percussion and Vibraphone. It’s a gloriously free performance, very heavily relying on traditions of improvised music, which takes a minimal stance in comparison to his work with Wolf Eyes and with Fred Frith, only occasionally bordering on noisy. Most of the piece makes more use of silence, space and the sound of the performance room itself, to create a three dimensional work which is engaging and haunting. A moving performance from one of the 20th century’s greats.
