Boomkat Product Review:
Robert Hood handles the drum machines and synths and Afrobeat legend Femi Kuti plays sax on this explosive Paris performance.
Recorded for French television, 'Variations' was proposed as a tribute to the Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown. Hood and Kuti were invited to Paris to collaborate on a special set, and unsurprisingly, it's virtuosic from the beginning. Kuti's sax immediately stands out, but Hood, working with rhythms and basslines that hook directly into Brown's musical DNA, seems to be in his element. The swinging beatbox grooves aren't exactly techno, but they highlight the dialog techno has always had with funk; the cheeky "hit me" samples are just icing on the cake.
A continuous 35-minute performance, the album is split into seven tracks, and presented as a nonstop piece, so you can choose how you want to absorb it.
