Boomkat Product Review:
Sepulchral ambient folk and neo-classical projections from Lau Nau, recorded last year on Kemiö Island, in Turku, Tampere and Stockholm. As on her previous two LPs for Locust, Laura Naukkarinen's elegant, confessional vocals - delivering lyrics in her native Finnish - are the star of the show, but equally important is the spacious production and the diverse, vivid instrumentation: jouhikko, bass, alto clarinet, guitar, piano, celesta. The biggest departure from past works, though, is the foregrounding of rhythm, especially in such pointedly disco-friendly fashion as on 'Kuoleman tappajan kuolema'. These drum-led experiments are pretty successful, but at the end of the day what you really want a Lau Nau album for is its serene, snow-capped, gently psychedelic songcraft, and there's plenty of that - 'Hamaran hevoset' being a particularly wintry and woozy delight.
