Boomkat Product Review:
Philly blues-psych rockers Birds of Maya are back with their first album in eight years and it's a ripper. One for anyone who misses the basement jammer sounds of the mid '00s - properly fuzzed rawk melters.
Birds of Maya's fourth album "Valdez" follows 2013's "Celebration", and if it sounds like literally no time has passed, probably because they actually recorded it back in 2014. It's taken eight years to arrive, but it was worth the wait: the Philly outfit are still able to capture a sound that makes us a little misty eyed.
All drum fills and lashings of fuzzbox grist, "Valdez" is a snapshot of an era we're not sure still exists, when bands trucked around in half-beat vans from shitty bar to shitty basement, playing to half-cut deadheads and wonks for beer money and a chance to hawk merch. We can almost smell the cigarettes and stale Bud from here.
