You probably know we're a bit more than partial to Pan Sonic here and it doesn't really get much better than their early classic material. Vaiko was released twelve years ago way back in 1995, yet for some reason still sounds totally on its own, totally unique. I think that's always going to be the power of Mika Vainio and Ilpo Väisänen - producing music that seems totally out of time, totally alien. Made up of squealing tones, buzzing feedback and the type of noises usually only heard as a microwave re-heats its last cup of hot chocolate their tracks are quite simply like nothing else on the planet. Even their subsequent copyists have never got the sound quite right, and listening to this album now in 2007 when the sound has been popularised once more it feels like the most futuristic electronic music you can imagine. There's a rough punkiness to the recordings which links them to the bubbling US noise scene, a measured academia that links them to Touch and of course that bleeping minimal 4/4 that would link them to neu-minimal and it amazes me how all these elements can collide so effortlessly on record. One minute you could be listening to swooping oscillators, the next minute ear piercing noise and the next a cycling 808 loop... it's impossible to predict and that's what makes Pan Sonic so addictive. Huge recommendation.
