Untitled DDS
Pianola Records boss Yohei Kunitomo turns in a deep heads mix for DDS, cutting together obscure jazz, soundtrack music, folk, field recordings, quirky covers and avant classical oddities for a porthole into Tokyo's listening-party scene.
Between running Pianola Records, DJing at Forest Limit every Thursday, reissue production with Conatala (Pale Cocoon’s ‘Mayu’), and his role in the "deep listening and digging” ‘Ideala’ collective - Kunitomo is a key figure in the Tokyo underground. His ‘untitled’ mixtape runs thru a vast, finely webbed spectra of selections from the back of the racks that enlivens the room-recorded atmosphere and really sucks us into his inner life to daydreamy effect.
Disarmingly atemporal, the mix feels unglued to our reality: its immediate physicality (tape hiss, vinyl crackle) and the warmhearted nonchalance of the selections lends an air of off-world magnetism. It’s one of those listens primed for windows-flung-open on an early autumn friday evening, sounds wafting in from the dusky streets below.
Quite honestly, we’re pulling hairs over trying to ID the looped voice about “rejecting the family business”, which we stumbled across recently during a stoned YouTube spelunk, and we expect many others might have the same frets across the set. He really pulls them from behind the ear, cuing up everything from Satie-esque solo piano studies to keening folk strings, concrète blips, radiant ambient, jump-cut field recordings, ye olde soundtrack music and Hawaiian-ish blooz, all for the good of yr health.
