Boomkat Product Review:
First ever collaboration between two high masters of psych blues and folk.
The paths of psychedelic free-spirits, Loren Connors & Tom Carter (Charalambides), cross for the first time on record in Untitled [No Title] for the former’s Family Vineyard; presenting an absorbing meditation on blues and avant-garde folk filtered thru spectral webs of reverb and fuzzy distortion.
As the front cover depicts them, both hunched face down over six string guitars, so the record sounds like a wordless dialogue conducted thru strings, frets and pealing amps; perfusing Connors’ shimmering, deep red and black statements with Carter’s spindly psychedelic growth patterns of raga-esque, organic beauty.
It’s a sound to fall head over heels for, and one which allows you to keep free-falling until the run out groove (and even then…). The live recording captures the whole scene perfectly, setting a wide atmospheric parameters which the duo flesh out with plasmic plumes of flanging, distorted phrases and reverberating strokes that ripple the senses with a calmly lucid, lysergic quality.
It’s almost as if they’re relaying messages from blues music’s purgatory, raining down a fine haze of drizzly grey-blue feelings and gestures that channel a billion half-remembered trips and lonely, porch side expressions.
