Autechre’s pivotal 8th studio album is reissued on its 20th anniversary, marking a renowned mid-period peak of their work via some of the deadliest jams in the duo’s peerless canon
In light of the knotty precedent ‘Draft 7.30’ (2003) and stark minimalism of ‘Confield’ (2001), Autechre’s 2005 album ‘Untitled’ was arguably their most accessible of the post-millennium era, depicting them pared back to compellingly physical action in permutations of the electro ‘nuum that begat and sparked techno, IDM, D&B, and all that good shit. Rhythm is unmistakably foregrounded over more explicit melodic and harmonic aspects for the most, pulling finely chiselled beats into hyper-articulated syncopations on tracks prone to lock in, then buckle into some other groove entirely, whilst not losing the thread.
We point to a massive percy in ‘Pro Radii’ as a case in point, where vertiginous, bombed out bass and nervy clack feels to almost uncannily parallel early dubstep, before some 3mins in it spin off on a whole other vector into needling 2-step and hyper wormholes of sawn-off MC cries and skull-rub resonances, then some gothic church organ coda. Aye we’ve still not gotten over this one - probably never will - and it remains a key portal for any new bloods looking for a way into their formidable catalogue.
Frankly you’re spoilt for choice with this one, from the mercurial ‘Sublimit’ - with its still deadly switch-up from steppers pulse to squashed electro-funk vamps, the maniacally hard hip hop turbulence of ‘Augmatic Disport’ and its transition into sublet steppers, or what sounds like a coven of evil frogs plotting a murder spree on ‘Lera.’ Obviously it depends on when you first heard it, but this one is properly formative stuff, miles away from the more wide-eyed electronica of their mid ‘90s classics, and more digestible than the complexities of ‘LP5’, distilling everything to a semi-organismic squirm and funk that arguably set the tone for their next 20 years of brilliance.
