Boston hardcore-emo darlings Karate pivoted to jazz on their fourth album, shunning popular logic and coming up with some of their finest material.
Back in 2000, rock music was in a peculiar state. The alt-emo scene that Karate helped popularize had been absorbed into pop-punk, and it left little room for maneuver for a band who weren't chasing arena shows or photo shoots. So Geoff Farina, Gavin McCarthy and Jeff Goddard lost the fuzz of 1998's 'The Bed is in the Ocean', replacing it with wiry jazz riffs and the occasional dusted drum break. It paid off too, 'Unsolved' is more engaging than many contemporaneous releases from Karate's peers.
Listening now the album sounds like a mid-point between Slint's 'Spiderland' and Tortoise's 'TNT', with Farina's feather half-spoken vocals dancing assuredly between sparse rhythms and plucked, muted guitar runs.
