Boomkat Product Review:
This is German experimental guitarist Steffen Basho-Junghans’ second release in his ‘unknown music’ series, which he has explained is a platform for him to release his “private excursions into the unknown”. Well it certainly sounds like that; the tracks on this album are private to the point of being unlistenable at times, yet that is part of the appeal. Basho-Junghans has managed to use his obvious talents as a guitarist to deconstruct the folk mould and push it into realms very rarely approached by most musicians. Alongside more traditionally structured tracks such as ‘Nothing, but Nice’ we have the guitar bending insanity of ‘I’ and ‘Out of the Time’, and somehow this juxtaposition works. As the shimmering, off-key notes start to trip over each other, it is wonderful to finally hear them making some kind of soundscape, which is what makes this record worth hearing. The tracks on first listen may sound difficult, but on repeated plays they reveal much fragility and beauty. An unusual record without a doubt, but a worthwhile one.
