Boomkat Product Review:
Superpang’s series visits LA sound artist Geneva Skeen for a hypnagogic field recording and drone session recorded in early summer 2021
Further to her releases with Room 40 and Touch, Geneva’s ‘Universal Building Supply’ evokes a sort of witching hour liminal space with tentative, sferic electronic resonances, curling raga-esque drones and humid nocturnal field recordings that add up to create an absorbing sense of meditative stillness.
The main piece and its shorter, ringing afterthought, appear to be the result of a mindset experienced during the “final sprint of graduate school”, with the 17 min title piece reflecting on the built environment around her, as influenced by readings of écriture féminine and a core focus of her art on “the contrast between facing the finite resources of our physical landscapes and their infinite digital representations.” There’s an oneiric clarity yet illusiveness to proceedings that comes into its own with immersed listening. Recommended!
