Union of Irreconcilables
Menace Ruine are a brutal and atmospheric avant-metal duo from Montreal, Canada, and Union Of Irreconcilables is their fourth album together. A collision of the deepest black metal and Current 93-esque sinister folk-isms, the band's sound seems to alternate between a rather subtle, skin-crawling sense of medieval-styled doom and outright feedback wrenching terror. The nine-minute opener, 'Collapse' barely hints at the records nuances, instead caking on layers of booming distortion, cackling, witchy vocals and sheet noise reminiscent of SunnO)))). 'The Upper Hand' comes as a major surprise after this, intertwining militaristic drums with an archaic vocal-led sound that's evocative of an incinerated Fursaxa record. The album continues to beguile and creep you out from here onwards, laying down goth-tastic organ arpeggios and scathing fuzz during 'Nothing Above Or Below' and unleashing a demonic epic for a closer: the remarkable quarter-hour 'Primal Waters Bed'. Think KTL-meets-David Tibet and you're in the vicinity.
