Boomkat Product Review:
Unheard Ofs & Forgotten Abouts is the first release on Frank Fairfield's Tompkins Square offshoot, Pawn Records, drawing from his own personal collection of 78rpm records. Fairfield's collection covers recorded music from right across the golden era or the gramophone, stretching between the 1910s to the 1960s. Significantly, the music reissued here doesn't only cover the expected bluegrass and Americana genres but a wide variety of musics from all over the globe. You'll hear Scottish pipers, Japanese song, African folk and Latin American instrumentals, with such surprising highlights as 'Sondiata' by a group of anonymous Sudanese wandering minstrels and the excellent 'Arato Csrds' by Sandor Nemeth's Gypsy Orchestra. All the recordings have been transferred with surface noise and hiss fully intact, overseen by record collector and producer Michael Kieffer, all sounding marvellous for this hugely enjoyable compilation.
