Boomkat Product Review:
This digital edition of The White Stripes' Canadian tour document, Under Great White Northern Lights, is obviously an audio-only affair, representing a comparatively lean package compared with the CD+DVD set doing the rounds, yet it still does an admirable job of capturing the restless, kinetic brilliance of the duo in a live setting. You can hear the ferocity dripping off Jack White's guitar strings during 'Black Math', or the discordant blues dirge 'The Union Forever', while titanic, instant-classic riffs abound with searing renditions of 'Icky Thump', 'Blue Orchid' and 'Seven Nation Army'. As that list would suggest, the hits get a decent airing, with the likes of 'Fell In Love With A Girl' plus memorable covers of 'Jolene' and 'I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself' slotting in nicely too. However, it's the more impromptu components of these songs that provide the best reasons for owning the album: given Meg's flexibility and Jack's marvellously wayward playing style these variations and deviations from the studio originals offer engaging, massively energetic re-readings of well-loved staples of the White Stripes catalogue.
