Boomkat Product Review:
Sounding quite unlike anyone else, Elmore Judd (aka Jesse Hackett) is a man of many talents: a songwriter, instrumentalist and producer, all wrapped up in a very oddball package. These skewed, interdisciplinary funk excursions take in influences from all over the globe and throughout musical culture, from the sub-woofer denting Eastern-isms of 'Bass Bully' to the vintage space echo of 'Air Makes My Day', Judd ably appropriates a host of different sounds and clashes everything together in a beautiful mish-mash of ideas. 'Ships In The Dark' takes on a low-slung skank rhythm, all combined with offbeat rhodes keys and characterful falsetto vocals, while 'Skull Head Convention' is a charmingly doomy jazz-folk number and 'Groove Killer' is pure DFA-esque party funk. A great selection batch of songs all round.
