Boomkat Product Review:
I've been reading up on US-based act The Ponys and keep seeing one referenced repeated over and over again; Sonic Youth. 'Turn the Lights Out' is the band's third album and was recorded by John Agnelio, who recorded Sonic Youth's latest effort 'Rather Ripped', but that's not the beginning and the end of comparisons. For instance, take your butts over to the album's third track 'Small Talk' and you may as well be listening to an SY cover band. I'm what you might call a Sonic Youth fetishist so this kind of blatant copyism doesn't really appeal to me much, but I have to say the entire album doesn't rest on the band doing tired renditions of 'Daydream Nation' tracks, indeed much of the album moves much further towards the sound of Jesus and Mary Chain or even Joy Division. Overall it's a pretty decent experience too, the guys have a good grasp of the sound they're trying to achieve, it's just when front-man Jered Gummere impersonates the great Thurston Moore I can feel hot chunks rising up my windpipe. A mixed record, but one with occasional moments of greatness.
