Boomkat Product Review:
As a Be Your Own Pet side project (and released by Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace imprint in the USA) Turbo Fruits got my attention straight away. I was a huge fan of Be Your Own Pet's killer teen-punk debut album so it was with open ears I took to this debut from the Turbo Fruits three piece, and I have not been disappointed. Taking a similar energy but interestingly placing Be Your Own Pet guitarist Jonas Stein on vocals this is rip-roaring punk rock music for those of us who actually still like to pogo our way to the front of a bar and then smack each other around a bit. It's funny because although these guys are under 21 they seem to embody a punk spirit that I think is all too often missed in the scene, they can't play so well, they can't sing so well, they can't write great pop songs but what they can do is make genuinely exhilarating punk pop music, the kind of punk music that grabs you by the balls and spits you out the other side. Influenced by classic rock, blues and hardcore they manage to frenetically battle their way through the album rarely stopping for a sip of water on the way, and I can imagine they'll probably burn out in a couple of years. You can't keep this kind of hedonism up for long - at least I don't think you can. For now though we've got 'Turbo Fruits' to keep us very satisfied indeed - Yeah Yeah Yeahs fans take note! Recommended.
