Cracking debut release of claggy, knackered house chug by a bedroom dwelling duo from sunny Middlesbrough on the North Sea coast. There's evidently something in the water (or the fungi) up there - as recent aces from Basic House/Opal Tapes, Rejections, The Equaliser and Dougie Pincott have revealed - but we'd have to say that on the strength of 'Tulpa', the brilliantly monikered Perfume Advert are our new favourites right now. Using an array of hardware, short wave radio and Ableton combined with imaginations sparked by H.P. Lovecraft and J.G. Ballard, their sound rubs up very nicely against the likes of Andy Stott, Huerco S and the rest of the Opal Tapes gang. Yet, they're strongly distinguished by dint of their innate funk mechanics and textural fidelity, finding the sweetspot between Basic House's off-kilter awkwardness and the sort of proper, hands-on nudge 'n budge that could have come from a Detroit producer or Actress. Make sure to check for highlights on the slow-slamming boogie churn of 'Rotted Out', in the lushly diffused atmospheres of 'Sand Worm', and the knotted, bumpy funk of 'Wades' and don't fight the feeling. UTB. Big recommendation!
